Alcohol :: essays research papers

Should alcohol production, sale, and consumption be prohibited? I think not. For hundreds of years, man has had choices – choices pertaining their food intake, their living quarters, and their life mates. Whether or not to consume alcohol has been a choice that man has had through recent history and is a choice which I believe should remain just that – a choice.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There has been only one period of history where alcohol purchase and consumption was limited. During the 1920’s, specifically 1920 to 1933 (and 1917 to 1919 in Canada) beverages such as beer, gin, rum, whiskey, and wine were forbidden to manufacture, sell, or transport. Supporters of prohibition believed alcoholic beverages â€Å"endangered mental and physical health† (World Book Encyclopedia). Results of the Volstead Act, passed by Congress that enforced prohibition, were disastrous. Underworld gangs controlled the sale of alcohol in communities. Was this a sign of good â€Å"mental or physical health†? During prohibition, the cost of this illegal alcohol skyrocketed costing people hundreds of dollars. I know what causes unsatisfactory mental health for me and that is having less money in my pocket. If this was such a good idea, why did Congress reverse it?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sure there will always be irresponsible people. And absolutely the irresponsible use of alcohol has produced disastrous results. But look at me. I’m a responsible person. When I drink I always make sure that I have a designated driver. Why should I be punished by the few who can’t handle that responsibility? How about my grandparents? They believe in having a glass of wine with their dinner. Its an old family custom which has maintained by my generation. Should I be told what I can and can’t drink?   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I was reading Time Magazine recently and a recent study has been released which states that a glass of wine a day has been shown to improve liver function, lower cholesterol and lessen the chance of heart disease (Time – June 1999). Now if alcohol sale or production was abolished, how could have that study been done. Especially in this decade when heart problems are at an all-time high due to the high availability of high cholesterol foods, I say you do anything you can do to help. Century and Youth

How can we be hope of our country when we are more updated on the kop or on fashion than being updated on the news In our economics and In the state of our country? Yes, I am a youth of today but I really can't help it. I am a ass's baby and comparing before than this 21 SST century really does have a lot of differences. We play patenting, landing lap pick and alike while the youth today play data, video games and others. It is because of modernization people don't even talk a lot because they are more focus on their gadgets.Everyone seems to be a gadget freak. Why don't we stop testing, beckoning, internet browsing, tweeting and Mainstreaming for a while and let us reflect. How many times you check on your phone a day? I bet less than 25 times. How many times you read a newspaper? I'm sure you don't even give a glance. How much do you care about your likes on faceable and how much do you care on how your parents like what you are doing?Some of you do really read tabloids and alike b ut most of the youth today would rather check their newsfeed gazillion times than read the articles on the newspaper. Youth now have a lot of knowledge on everything they read on faceable, the question now is, do they have knowledge on what's on their preference book at school? It is really funny to think that youth can stay up late just because of playing data or because of beckoning but when It comes to studies, they rather sleep early.When we ask most of the youth today, we can't get a nice answer, we can't get a straight answer. Why? It is because that's what they get from too much watching television and Dolling everything even If It's good or bad. Who's to blame; the youth, the media, the parents or the society? You can you still consider yourself a hope of our mother land? Let us start the change or the better, don't let other things deviate us from where we should be, don't let the circumstances stop us from learning, let us work together and prove that we can still critical ly and act smart.People can change, and we still have all our time to change for the better. Let us face our books not faceable. Let us be more concern on what the government is doing not what your neighbors are doing. Let us be the role model of the young ones. Hester managed to stand up for herself even though she was troubled and scared. Her strength is recognized through Hawthorne’s powerful yet genuine words which enables the readers to relate and reflect on her as a real person. In addition, Hawthorne thoroughly understood the importance of the development of a character because most readers would not appreciate a character who remains the same throughout the story. In the beginning of the story, Hester appeared as a prideful person through her action at the scaffold. â€Å"until, on the threshold of the prison-door, she repelled him, by an action marked with natural dignity and force of character, and stepped into the open air, as if by her own free will† (Hawthorne 57).
